Your front door is the first impression, the first line of security, and the single biggest air-leak penalty in most older Houston homes. A premium entry door system from Therma-Tru, ProVia, or Pella combines a fiberglass or solid wood door with a reinforced jamb, multi-point lock, full-perimeter weatherstrip, and adjustable threshold that seals tight against the floor. This page covers fiberglass vs steel vs wood, the security upgrades that actually matter, and what a proper install looks like.
- Cost?
- $2,200 to $6,500 installed for most residential entry doors.
- Best material?

- Security?
- Multi-point locks (3-point engagement) on every install.
- Install time?
- 4 to 6 hours for single door, 6 to 8 for double doors.
Fiberglass vs steel vs wood
Fiberglass. Therma-Tru Classic-Craft, ProVia Signet, Pella Architect Series. Looks like real wood (textured graining), does not warp, does not rot, holds factory finish for 10 plus years. Best all-around Houston choice. R-value typically 6 to 7.
Steel. ProVia Embarq, Therma-Tru Smooth-Star steel. Maximum security against forced entry. Lowest cost. Vulnerable to rust at paint chips and to dents from impacts. Insulating foam core gives R-value of 6.
Solid wood. Mahogany, white oak, alder. Highest cost, highest aesthetic, highest maintenance burden. Requires marine varnish or premium finish refreshed every 2 to 4 years in Houston humidity. R-value typically 2 to 3, much lower than fiberglass or steel.
Security upgrades that actually matter
Multi-point lock. Three locking points engage simultaneously: top, middle, bottom. Bypasses the standard single-deadbolt weakness. Required on most premium door warranties.
Reinforced strike plate. 4 inch screws into the wall studs (not the jamb alone). The single biggest improvement for kick-in resistance.
Composite or LVL jamb. Solid wood jambs split when forced. Composite and LVL jambs flex and hold.
Impact-rated glass. If your door has sidelights or glass inserts, upgrade to laminated impact glass. Burglars cannot punch through to reach the deadbolt.
Proper install process
Old door removed. Existing jamb inspected for rot and termite damage. Rough opening squared and shimmed to plumb and level. New pre-hung door system set into the opening. Low-expansion foam plus backer rod for airtight perimeter seal (not high-expansion foam which bows the jamb). Threshold adjusted for tight floor seal. Multi-point lock installed and adjusted. Smart hardware programmed and tested. Full-perimeter weatherstrip checked for compression. Walk through with homeowner before payment.
