Metal is the longest-life residential roofing system available in the Houston market. A correctly installed standing seam roof in 24-gauge Galvalume with a Kynar 500 finish carries a 50-year service expectation, qualifies for the maximum Texas wind and hail discount, reflects a meaningful share of summer solar load, and survives Gulf Coast hurricanes that strip asphalt fields off neighboring homes. The trade-off is upfront cost. This page explains what we install, what it costs, when metal is the right answer, and how to choose between the four metal systems we sell in Houston.
- Cost?
- $14 to $22 per sq ft installed for standing seam in the Houston metro.
- Lifespan?
- 50+ years for Galvalume with Kynar 500 finish.
- Insurance discount?
- Yes. Class 4 impact rating qualifies for the Texas wind and hail credit.
- Loud in rain?
- No. Solid-deck installation is no louder than asphalt.
The four metal roofing systems we install
Standing seam. The premium choice. Vertical concealed-fastener panels with raised seams crimped or snapped together. No exposed screws. Best wind, water, and longevity performance. Right for high-end residential, contemporary builds, and any home where the roof is visible and the homeowner wants the look.
Stamped metal shingles. Pressed steel or aluminum shingles in profiles that mimic slate, shake, or tile. Class 4 impact rated, lighter than tile, and approved for installation over framing not designed for tile dead load. DECRA Metal Roofing is our default brand.
R-panel and PBR-panel. Screw-down corrugated panels for outbuildings, barns, agricultural, and budget-conscious residential. Less expensive, faster to install, but exposed fasteners require periodic re-torquing.
Aluminum and copper. Aluminum for coastal homes within 5 miles of Galveston Bay. Copper for high-end architectural accents, bay windows, dormers, and historic restorations.
Materials we specify and why
Galvalume substrate. Steel coated with 55 percent aluminum, 43.4 percent zinc, and 1.6 percent silicon. Outperforms galvanized steel on Gulf Coast corrosion resistance. 24-gauge minimum for standing seam, 26-gauge acceptable for stamped systems.
Kynar 500 (PVDF) finish. The premium fluoropolymer paint system. 30 to 40 year warranties on chalk and fade. SMP (silicone-modified polyester) finishes are cheaper and shorter-lived; we install them only when the homeowner accepts the trade-off in writing.
Synthetic underlayment. 30-pound felt is unacceptable under metal in Houston heat. We install Sharkskin Ultra SA or equivalent self-adhered synthetic across the full deck, not just at penetrations.
Concealed clips, stainless fasteners. Standing seam panels float on stainless clips that allow thermal expansion. Galvanized fasteners are not used on Galvalume because of galvanic corrosion risk.
Metal versus asphalt: when each makes sense
Asphalt wins on first cost. A typical Houston home re-roof in architectural shingles runs $12,000 to $20,000. The same home in standing seam runs $35,000 to $55,000. The break-even on whole-life cost lands around year 18 to 22 when you account for the second asphalt replacement, the energy savings, and the insurance discount.
Metal wins outright on three scenarios: long-term ownership (10+ year horizon), high wind exposure (waterfront, coastal, hilltop), and architectural visibility where the roof is part of the design. Asphalt wins on flips, short-term holds, and tight budgets.
The U.S. Department of Energy publishes a useful overview of cool roofing performance at energy.gov/energysaver/cool-roofs that supports the energy-cost case for reflective metal.
Our metal roof installation process
Standing seam installation is unforgiving. The clip pattern, panel modulation, valley details, and ridge terminations all have to be set out correctly before the first panel hits the deck. Our process:
- Engineering layout with panel modulation drawn for every slope.
- Tear-off and deck inspection. Replace any soft sheathing.
- Self-adhered synthetic underlayment across the full deck.
- Clip layout on engineered spacing for the panel system and wind zone.
- Panel installation from eave to ridge, snap-lock or mechanically seamed depending on profile.
- Custom flashings bent on site to match every penetration, valley, and termination.
- Ridge vent and trim with sealed end caps.
- Final walk and warranty registration.
Most Houston homes complete in 5 to 10 working days depending on slope count and complexity.
What the warranty actually covers
Three warranties stack on a metal roof. The substrate warranty (Galvalume) is typically 25 years against rust-through. The finish warranty (Kynar 500) is typically 30 to 40 years on chalk and fade. The workmanship warranty (ours) is lifetime, transferable to the next owner. The manufacturer warranty registration is filed by us at completion. You receive copies of all three on a single PDF with the project file.

Is your home a good candidate for metal?
The best metal roof candidates in Houston are: long-term owners, contemporary or modern-traditional architecture, homes with simple roof geometry (fewer valleys = lower install cost), and homeowners who plan to install solar in the next decade (standing seam mounts solar without roof penetrations). The least-suitable candidates are short-term flips, complex Victorian rooflines with many dormers, and HOA-restricted neighborhoods that require shingle aesthetics.
