Towne Lake is one of the largest residential lake communities in Texas and the western Harris County hail corridor runs directly over it. Open-water wind across the 300-acre lake arrives without canopy attenuation, which means south and west elevations on lakefront homes take 15 to 25 percent more wind load than equivalent inland homes. The April 2024 hail event hit Towne Lake harder than almost any other Cypress neighborhood. Many homes are 8 to 15 years old with original 25-year architectural shingles now in the failure window. We spec Class H (130 mph) shingle ratings on every lakefront replacement and handle the Towne Lake ARC packet free of charge.

- Yes, widespread damage. Most lakefront roofs justified full replacement.
01 // Lakefront wind load
The 300-acre Towne Lake provides open-water fetch that amplifies wind load on lakefront homes. NOAA wind rose data for the Cypress area shows prevailing south and southwest summer winds; lakefront south and west elevations consistently take the highest sustained loads. Standard 110 mph wind-rated architectural shingles are undersized for this exposure. We standardize Class H (130 mph) ratings (GAF Timberline HDZ, Owens Corning Duration Storm, CertainTeed Landmark Pro) with 6 nail per shingle install pattern on every lakefront replacement.
02 // The April 28 2024 hail event
The April 28 2024 supercell that hit Bridgeland also dropped 2+ inch hail across Towne Lake, with reports of 3+ inch in the Hawthorne and Ravenna sections. NOAA SPC logged the event as one of the largest single hail-day claim drivers in northwest Harris County for the decade. Towne Lake roofs from 2010 to 2019 vintage took particularly heavy damage because the first generation of post-Ike architectural shingles used aluminum-silicate granules that fracture and dislodge more readily than current SBS-modified products. We are still filing supplements on under-scoped Towne Lake claims from this event.
03 // Lakefront UV reflection
Waterfront UV reflection accelerates shingle aging on south-facing slopes by roughly 30 percent versus inland exposure. Visible signs: premature granule loss, asphalt bleeding, and curling at the tab edges 5 to 8 years earlier than expected service life. Algae-resistant granule formulations (StainGuard Plus, AlgaeShield 25) materially help. We spec algae-resistant product as default on every Towne Lake replacement.
04 // Towne Lake ARC and lender requirements
Towne Lake ARC enforces a defined color matrix and requires permit copies before final approval. Many lakefront homes are financed through portfolio lenders that require post-completion inspection certificates. We handle the ARC packet, pull the Harris County permit, and provide the completion certificate package at no charge with every replacement contract.
